Overthink

It's in the air

For the past few years I've been dealing with what my doctor believes is a leftover symptom of Covid-19. For weeks at a time, rather than the smell of pollen in the air, I smell thick, acrid smoke. Sometimes it feels like there is an angry, raging fire burning just out of view, where I’ll never be able to see it.

Although the smell is no better now than it was at first, I’ve found that over time I’ve become more used to it, and it doesn’t keep me awake at night as it once did. When the smoke smell returns now, I sometimes even for a brief moment feel comforted by its familiarity.

There really was smoke in the air this evening though, when after a gorgeous day filled with the warmth of spring, fresh grass and pollen, thick dark clouds of smoke appeared in the sky and we were advised locally to keep our doors and windows closed due to a fire that broke out at an industrial park nearby.
